As one of Oregon’s pioneering wineries, Sokol Blosser has the benefit of experience and foresight when it comes to implementing sustainable practices in its business. Today the family business is embarking on its second generation of leadership and the meaning of sustainability has grown. Co-president Alex Sokol Blosser reflects, “Sustainability has meant different things at different time periods. In the 80s we were more focused on cover crops and protecting from erosion. In the 90s it expanded to pest management practices, and today we’re organically certified and we’re looking at eliminating our carbon footprint.”
Long before the term sustainability entered common business-speak, Sokol Blosser made it a priority, and today see themselves as leaders in sustainable practices. “It’s been evolving as the decades go by and we keep up with new technology advances and information that support sustainability,” notes Alex. “Third-party certification has been a big deal in giving these practices legitimacy and providing consumers with something they can rely on.”
Now with business operations certified by the Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine program and Oregon Tilth organic, Sokol Blosser in no way intends to slow down. Currently, solar panels on the estate property fulfill about 33 percent of the company’s power needs and Alex hopes that will double in the next five years. The company is also looking at expanding its employee garden into a year-round endeavor to provide a substantial food source for employees. And carbon neutrality remains a business target. “That is our next greatest challenge,” remarks Alex, never one to rest on his laurels.
