What is an example of a small change we could all make to make the planet a better place? If everyone would plant a garden it would give people a sense of accomplishment, joy and a first hand experience and deeper understanding of sustainability and the challenges of sustainability.
What was the biggest surprise about sustainable practices? Once good habits are formed, how easy it truly is to maintain sustainable practices.
What is the one thing that you’d like to be remembered for? Raising kind, thoughtful and intelligent children that understand the importance of perseverance and working hard to achieve both personal and professional goals.
For Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash, the creation of a sustainable wine business started at home. For the past 23 years, they have been organically farming their home garden. These efforts led to a greater understanding and app
reciation for sustainable growing practices. When the couple started planning their winery 10 years ago, many of the practices were a natural extension of what they did at home: recycling of all possible winery waste; carpooling efforts by staff; composting organic waste from the kitchen; staff on-site organic garden; paperless public relations materials; and the use of recycled products in both the vineyard and winery. “We’ve always been resourceful and respectful of the environment. Our enjoyment and stewardship of the outdoors naturally transcends into our business plan,” explained Lynn Penner-Ash.
Penner-Ash’s sustainability efforts are not limited to the environment. “We pride ourselves in taking a pragmatic approach to sustainability, meaning that fiscal sustainability is just as important as environmental sustainability. We truly believe people appreciate the fact that as small business owners we are doing everything possible to be good stewards of the land while consistently creating a quality product year after year,” she continued. “Our intent is to never over-emphasize the sustainability aspects of our business in our public relations material as it’s should be a natural result of thoughtful and intelligent business strategy.”
